Lord I don’t know what to make of this message, but it has been sitting on the front porch swing in a lazy lemonade drinking kind of way. Lolligag me with a spoon to coin a phrase. Seems folks want to get upset at just about any thing these days. But to me the things that upset them are minimolehills and not worth breaking a sweat over. What is with the world today? I expect this kind of behavior from the press corps. Thats their mission statement. Find a minimolehill, get a camera crew and go film. Then get your press buddies to ask two differently poled peoples to comment on it. Don’t matter what two as long as they are opposed to each other. Republicans and Democrats. Christians and Agnostics. Pro-life and Abortion Advocates, or Pro-choice is what they call themselves. Doesn’t matter as long as the story has some good quotes fom one of the sides calling the other side some nasty names. Pretty soon people will choose sides and the comments from young and old will land like meadow muffin land mines. Time was you could take your daily paper and wrap the fish in it, or change the rug for the canary. The printing press is going out of business. All the major rags are laying off. LA Times, NY Times, Washington Post all down in readership and circulation since the news became web enabled. Notice it had nothing to do with the demise of people eating fish or lack of caged canary populations.
But the media and the news organizations still have a major influence upon the world and society’s opinions today. Sure there are bloggers that slant the major topics and spin the web their own way, but CNN, and the other alphabet soup broadcasters derive their livelihood from Madison Ave, and Madison Ave depends on consumers to buy, buy, and buy some more. Who ever said “Follow the money” cracked the code. Look at any web site today and you will have to mouse about very carefully so as not to trigger one of those blasted popups that wants you to buy, buy, and buy some more. And a number of them are very eye catching, using the tried and true practices that have worked for generations to raise the interest of your typical American WASP. After all, they have the greatest population with the most disposable income to dispose of. Next would be your millionaire sports, music, and Hollywood artists, but most of them dispose of their income on bigger bling than you and I can afford. How many diamond encrusted toilet seats do you have in your house? You may say this is sour grapes, but Jesus said it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. This is in all three of the synoptic gospels but appears first in Mt 19:24. The disciples are shocked when they hear this, and ask Who then can be saved?
Here then is the most important issue facing mankind today. Who then can be saved? Why do I think this is the most important question for you to ask yourself and your loved ones? Look around. Is your life better today than it was on September 10, 2001? Is the world becoming a better place to live in and raise a family in? Your children and Grandchildren will be taught to memorize passages from the Muslim Holy Book in public school. What did Allah do for you today? Did he say “For God so loved the world that He gave his only beggotten son that whosoever believeth on Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”? No, Jesus said this. Did your God allow himself to be nailed to a cross in order to taste death, die an atoning death, and pay the full price of your sin? Jesus did that. But, you know what else? He didn’t stay in the grave. He rose from the grave and has proved to the whole world that He is not only the Son of God, but very God himself. Father, Son, Holy Ghost. Three whos, one what.
Did you notice the word “whosoever” in the quote from the Gospel of John? I love that word. I am a whosoever. So are you. So what is keeping you from believing?
Faith. Not a blind faith. This is not a leap into the dark faith we are talking about. There is over two thousand years of people whos lives have been completely changed by an encounter with this Savior of the World. Forty men over four thousand years have penned 66 books to tell one story. Amazingly you can find a copy of this book in most hotels thanks to the Gideons.
So, if you are in a hotel, or even if you are not, before you go to sleep tonight dust off that prayer your mama taught you.
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Should I die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.
