Growing up in the 50’s in America the coupes, the sedans, the station wagons were American made. Some guys were Chrysler enthusiasts, some loved, lived, and breathed Chevys. Our family were Fords folks. We saw many a drive-in movie in a Ford from an open tailgate. Dinah Shore may have sung “see the U-S-A in your Chevrolet”, but we camped every Summer in several states in the lower 48 in our Ford. Sea to shining sea, Florida to Maine. Seattle to Montana, across the open plains of Kansas. The great and endless State of Texas took three days to cross.
As I got older cars were not just family scene-i-cruisers, but angst loaded teenage status symbols. It was not cool to pickup a date with the family station wagon, especially for the girl’s father. No, no!
The boasters and braggarts loved to run down your car no matter what. FORD became Found On the Road Dead, or Fix Or Repair Daily. Those are just two of the insults I can repeat in an open forum.
I think the Apostle Paul would be able to identify with Found On the Road Dead. He often repeated his salvation story to anyone who would get within his sphere of influence. To a certain degree his story is our story. Were we not dead in our trespasses and sins? Paul was knocked off his high horse on to a road to Damascus by a bright light. This is the same light God spoke in creating all that He created “In the beginning”. Whether in Genesis, or the Gospel of John. That light is the light of men.
The Apostle Paul prayed in Colosians:
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son: (Col 1:12-13)
It is God’s own witness within us that proves to us over and over again that we are His. That we are indeed born from above and are part of this heavenly kingdom. Often we say,”I know, that I know, that I know.” Those “that I know”s could be expressed in to infinity and they would be no less true.
So, being Found On the Road Dead He takes us in and creates a new model. The true Ford designers did their preliminary work in clay. So does our designer.
And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it. Jer 18:4
Only this new model has spirit drive. We have this treasure in earthen vessels. The same fire that was in Gideon’s vessels is in us. We too can put God’s enemies to flight as the host of midian.
Not only were we Found On the Road Dead, but we are Fix or Repair Daily. We need to be daily drivers. Driven to our knees, driven to read and receive and internalize God’s Word. It is our Owner’s manual.
